I am a professor and IU Kokomo (Go Cougars!) and educational consultant--passionate about inspiring preservice teachers to become reading role models!
As
a current literacy professor, I must practice what I teach! I was inspired by Donalyn Miller's text, The Book Whisperer, and disheartened to find that "54.3 percent of
preservice teachers were unenthusiastic about reading, leaving little hope that
these teachers would be able to inspire students to engage in an activity they
themselves did not enjoy” (p. 107). If
teachers are going to push students to read everyday, this needs to be
practiced by teachers as well!
Through this blog I am participating and challenging my students to read 20 books this semester. This
challenge invites my preservice teachers, and all who follow this blog, to steal 15 minutes of time for reading each day to
develop one's own habit for reading and “catch the reading bug.” We all have 15
minutes at some point during the day we can set aside for reading. Ready? Set? Go!
